England Search for World Cup Bases Amidst Concerns of Missing Out On First-Choice Location to the Dutch.
England's football governing body has sent scouts to the America this week to evaluate potential facilities for the forthcoming tournament, amid growing worries that their preferred site could be taken by the Dutch national team.
Draw Complexities Disrupt Preparations
Manager Thomas Tuchel had previously cleared an FA strategy for England to be based in Kansas following a warm-up training camp in Fort Lauderdale. However, after the recent tournament draw, there are now fears that the Netherlands, who have their group stage matches in Kansas, will be given first choice on the chosen facility at Sporting Kansas City—a high-performance centre operated by US Soccer.
FIFA allocates training camps according to geography and world rankings if there is competition, with the draw potentially pitting the FA against the Netherlands and Argentina for bases in the tournament's central region.
Considering Alternative Options
With England's group fixtures scheduled to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now understood to be exploring other options on the east coast. The FA began its search for training bases at the beginning of the year, with Tuchel and director of football John McDermott touring potential locations during the Club World Cup last summer.
Despite this advanced planning, there was always an acceptance that the final tournament draw could significantly alter their logistical arrangements.
Knockout Stage Travel Strategy
The Three Lions have the eighth most demanding group stage schedule in terms of travel. Topping Group L would put England on course for a round of 32 game in Atlanta, followed by possible round of 16 tie in Mexico City.
- Major Departure: The FA may decide to move between venues for the later rounds should England progress, a major shift from its standard protocol of maintaining a fixed tournament base.
- FIFA Recommendation: FIFA is believed to be recommending such a itinerant strategy for the vast 2026 tournament.
After the training base is confirmed, the FA will turn its attention to scheduling two warm-up matches in Florida at the beginning of June.
